Hitler’s Boo-Boo

* The invasion of the Soviet Union by Adolf Hitler in 1941, known as Operation Barbarossa, is often cited as a major strategic failure caused in part by a lack of practical judgement and common sense. Hitler underestimated the size, resilience, and industrial capacity of the Soviet Union and believed the campaign would be a quick victory. He ignored warnings from military advisers about the dangers of fighting a prolonged war on the vast Eastern Front while still at war with Great Britain.

* German forces advanced rapidly at first, but poor planning for supply lines, the enormous distances, and the severe Russian winter, combined with the determined defense of cities such as Moscow, stalled the offensive. These miscalculations turned the invasion into a long and costly conflict that Germany could not sustain, ultimately contributing greatly to its defeat in World War ll.
