SURFSIDE CONDOMINIUM COLLAPSE (2021)
* On June 24, 2021, at approximately 1:22 am, the Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside, Florida , partially collapsed while residents were asleep. The 12-story beachfront building experienced a sudden structural failure, causing roughly half of the structure to fall resulting in the deaths of 98 people, with others injured.
* Investigations later identified long-term structural deterioration, especially in the pool deck and parking garage areas, where water intrusion and concrete damage had gone unrepaired for years. Federal engineers concluded the collapse likely began in the pool deck before rapidly spreading through the building.
* The disaster led to extensive search-and-rescue operations, national attention on building safety, legal settlements for the victim’s families, and new Florida laws strengthening condominium inspection and maintenance requirements.
