L’Ambiance Plaza Collapse (1987)

* The L’Ambiance Plaza collapse occurred on April 23, 1987, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, when a partially completed high-rise apartment building suddenly collapsed during construction. The failure killed 28 construction workers and injured many others, making it one of the deadliest construction accidents in U.S. history.

* Investigations found that the collapse was caused by flaws in the lift-slab construction method, combined with design errors, inadequate bracing, and poor oversight. As concrete floor slabs were  being  lifted into place,  insufficient temporary supports and connection failures led to a progressive collapse of the structure.

* The disaster prompted major changes in building codes, engineering standards, and construction safety practices, especially regarding lift-slab construction, and emphasized the need for stronger professional accountability and site supervision.
