The Salem Witch Trials (1692)
* The Salem Witch Trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions that took place in colonial Massachusetts between February and May of 1692. Trigged by accusations of witchcraft in the Salem Village community, the trials led to the arrest of more than 200 people and the execution of 20 individuals, most of whom were women.
* The events were fueled by widespread fear, religious extremism, and local conflicts. Many of the accused were subject to harsh interrogations and relied on dubious evidence, such as spectral testimony. Ultimately, the trials ended and the colonly later admitted the proceedings were a mistake, leading to compensation for some families of the victims.
* The Salem Witch Trials remain a powerful symbol of the dangers of mass hysteria and injustice.
