Politically Motivated Violence

The following example appeared in The Kiplinger Letter, Vol. 102, No. 39.

” Politically motivated violence has lawmakers fearing for their lives, forcing many to take extra precautions when they go out in public. While those fears have simmered for years, they have been amplified recently by murders of political figures, especially last week’s shocking assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and the shooting of two Dem state legislators in Minn. in June. Not to mention the attempts on President Trump last year.

Many in congress say they are increasingly receiving violent threats and have asked congressional officials for enhanced protection. Discussions in the House and Senate about how to better protect members are under way. But with 535 of them, the cost of personal security details for all would be steep. Some will simply appear in public less. Others vow to carry guns of their own.

The fear of more attacks will likely shape upcoming election campaigns. Expect fewer outdoor rallies ahead of next year’s midterms. Security measures will be significantly beefed up at whatever events candidates do attend.”

Author’s Note

* It appears that lawmakers believe that there is a gun problem only when the guns are aimed at them! What about protecting the children in schools? Recent estimates indicate that the total number of children in grades K-12 in the United States is approximately 56 million. They are the most valuable resource we have!
