R&D Funding-2025

Ref. The Kipling Letter…Vol.102, No. 23

* A big question facing American innovation: What will happen to federal R&D funding?

* Among the agencies targeted for cost-cutting: The National Institute of Health. The NIH is the worlds largest funder of biomedical research, which the president wants to scale back. So far officials have canceled or frozen billions in grants or contracts and fired 1,200 employees; in addition to announcing 37% budget cuts for the fiscal year 2026. The hardest-hit areas of research include the study of infectious, plus heart and lung ailments.

* Also on the list is The National Science Foundation which funds a substantial share of basic research outside of the biomedical sphere. The administration has eliminated the agency’s 37 research divisions, canceled numerous grants, and is planning for 55% spending cuts in its next fiscal budget. These spending cuts are likely to hurt, if they survive lawsuits and get an OK from congress.
