Titantic’s Lifeboats
The RMS Titantic was a luxury British steamship that sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912 after striking an iceberg, leading to the deaths of more than 1,500 passengers and crew. The Titantic was the largest and most luxurious ship in the world, and was also one of the most technologically advanced. Historians and other experts still debate over the reasons why the Titantic sank, and the best answer is that it was a combination of circumstances (i.e., many examples of no common sense).
One of the major circumstances contributing to the large number of deaths was the lack of lifeboats! Titantic’s original design called for 64 lifeboats. That number was later cut in half, then nearly cut in half again. The ship owners felt too many lifeboats would clutter the deck and obscure the First Class passenger’s views.
